Writer, Photographer… Marketer

From my early days writing, editing, and creating art for The Harvard Lampoon, I looked to marketing communications as a way to get paid for being creative. And it worked!

A high school AP course in US History taught me to think and argue logically: thesis, argument, support. My undergraduate education reinforced that logic through the scientific method: hypothesis, test, refine hypothesis, etc. My MBA helped me understand how to frame problems and solutions in a business context.

But there need to be original ideas at the start of the process.

Rigorously choosing among well trodden paths is better than nothing, but it’s unlikely to get you anywhere new. So my unique contribution is an ability to start with the business requirements, understand competitive and financial realities, and then fill a blank page with ideas. Thinking naively, laterally, making leaps… and then coming back to a cold, hard look at whether something new might actually work.

I nurture my creativity by carving out time for my own expression. I’ve written half a dozen screenplays (one optioned for several years). More recently, I wrote two speculative science fiction novels about the intersection of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, and a creature thriller (all self-published through Amazon).

My photography focuses on the beauty of natural and built environments. Recent recognition includes:

  • Two images selected by Susan Eley for the 2025 Annual Contemporary Art Show, at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, CT.

  • One image chosen for the Stamford Art Association’s 2025 Portraits of Our Planet show.

  • Also in 2025, two images shown in the Black, White and a Splash of Color show at Meriden CT’s Gallery 53.

  • Two images selected by Andrew Moore for inclusion in the Rowayton Arts Center's 2024 Annual Photography and Sculpture show.

  • In 2023, eight images featured in a joint show with visual artist (and my wife) Ruth Chapman, at the Radius Gallery at ArcStages in Pleasantville, NY, curated by Stuart Vance.

  • One image chosen by James Barron for the 2022 Annual Contemporary Art Show, at the Carriage Barn Arts Center.

  • Also in 2022, one image selected by Platon for Carriage Barn's 42nd Annual Photography show.

  • Published in Cagibi, a digital literary journal based in NYC.

  • Shown at the Artists Association of Nantucket Gallery and the Art Gallery at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.

The photography in this website is my own work.
